Hot, New Arrivals

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Fall is a favorite time of the year.
It brings comfort. The summer heat is gone, the kids have settled to their school routines and the mom and dads can breathe (at least for now:-)
It is festive - hay rides, harvests, apple picking, trips to the pumpkin patch, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the holidays are coming up!
It is colorful - bright orange pumpkins, red, green and yellow apples, black cats and witches, colorful kids' costumes, red, yellow and brown leaves, bright yellow and purple mums.

We would like to share the Fall spirit by recommending these bestselling magazines. We are making them available for you, for immediate shipping from http://www.bookoto.com/:
The cover showcases the artwork of this issue's featured mixed-media artist, Tricia Scott. What she did with this old wooden desk organizer is something only an 'outside the box' thinker would do! And that's just the cover. This magazine offers anyone who is hungry for information and inspiration, several opportunites to learn about mixed media art, rubber stamping, lettering art techniques, and calligraphy. It contains details of fantastic artwork, including step-by-step, how-to instructions. It is a full-colored, 160-page magazine. Each page contains breathtaking photography of vintage and contemporary artwork. These artwork include altered postcards, "captured fairy art", pieced paper couture, lettering art, and many more! It is truly inspirational, and almost magical.

"Show Us the Mini!" Challenge

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

We are proud to feature the newest, and without a doubt, one of the most inspirational publications in scrapbook art. This book focuses on the real reason why we create scrapbooks, i.e., to record life's precious little details and to share our stories using a rather cute, handy and practical medium, the mini book aka "the mini." As the author herself explained in the book, mini books are a freedom from the usual 12x12 or 8x11 formats we are all used to. It feels liberating to see a finished work of art that fits right into your two hands, using less materials, and even lesser time. They're much faster to fill up (if you're into such a style); and fastest when you work simple.

The person responsible for this inspiration is Ali Edwards. Anyone who's been an avid scrapbooker would recognize her in a heartbeat. But then, for the benefit of the noobs (read: newbies in net-speak) in this uber-addictive hobby, please join us in featuring Ali Edwards, author of four books incorporating great designs, cool concepts and totally doable project ideas! These are: A Designer's Eye for Scrapbooking, A Designer's Eye for Scrapbooking with Patterned Paper, Life Artist and Sharing your Story: Recording Life's Details with Mini Books. (note: All of Ali's books are available at bookoto.com)

And now for the Challenge
:

Show us the Mini!

HOW:
  • Pick a theme - any theme. Something or someone special; the first day of school; a day in your life; a family tradition; your favorite hobby; love notes; shopping list; wish list...

  • Use any type of mini book (as long as it does not exceed an 8 X 8.). An accordion made of cardstock, a premade one, or made from scratch. Be as creative as you can be.
  • Email us your finished mini works of art at challenges@bookoto.com with a brief explanation on 1.) what the mini book is about; 2) what materials did you use and 3) how did you create it (tell us the process).
  • You may send up to two (2) entries to qualify for this contest. Entries should be original works and should have not been entered into previous competitions , local or international.

WHO MAY JOIN: This challenge is for ALL scrapbookers - anywhere in the world.

Send us your entries on or before 12:00 noon, October 26, 2008, eastern standard time, or 12:00 midnight, October 27, Manila time .

THE WINNER

Ali Edwards will help us pick a winner. The winner of this challenge will receive...hold your breath, a copy of the brand new book "Sharing your Story"!
And that's not all! The prize is autographed by Ali Edwards herself!!! What could be more exciting! :-)

Have fun, everyone!

Sharing Your Story: A Review

Monday, September 22, 2008

We at bookoto.com could not be more excited when we finally got to leaf through the much-awaited Ali Edwards' book: Sharing Your Story ( Recording Life's Details with Mini Books). And I don't think the press releases did justice to what exactly the book offers.

This 160-page gem of an idea book is fully loaded, pregnant, filled to the brim, bursting at the seams, for wondrous possibilities! I cannot believe my eyes to see such astounding works that leap at you. And to think they all come from mini pages?

This, I believe, is Ali's finest contribution to the scrapbooking community so far. And reading her book made me understand why she made a sort of tribute to this format called the mini books.

Why, indeed?

As Ali herself explained in the book, mini books are a freedom from the usual 12x12 or 8x11 formats we are all used to. It feels liberating to see a finished work of art that fits right into your two hands, using less materials, and even lesser time. They're much faster to fill up (if you're into such a style); and fastest when you work simple.

For me, mini books are easiest to accomplish because they're less intimidating, handy enough to carry around as a brag book, and they make perfect gifts for any or even on no occasion.

The book is a collaboration of several artists which include our very own Pinay scrapbook artist Maria Grace Abuzman ( her minis are terrific), Emily Falconbridge, Mou Saha, Laura Kurz, Shannon Taylor, Dedra Long, Maggie Holmes and many more!

The book does not stop from oozing with these veritable gems of inspirations and ideas, it also includes how-to's on how to start, enumerated the many different minis available on the market, and of course, if you're feeling inspired you can even make your own and this book has the step-by-step instructions! The last few pages also include a short Q & A all about mini books.

bookoto.com is proud to include "Sharing your Story" in our selection of scrapbooking and hobby books. This is literally a gem of a book!

A Quick Review: Simple Scrapbooks

Sunday, September 21, 2008

A lot of times we get huge inspirations from what is considered simple, and yet perfectly designed layouts. This issue of Simple Scrapbooks has that to offer, particularly, the layouts of its featured designer, Lain Ehmann (on pages 19, 43, 67, 91.) Timeless stamping techniques, as well as ideas in spicing up our scrap space are featured as well.

All throughout this 106-page mag, considering that this is the Fall issue, it contains many fabulous ideas for the fall season. There are definitely over 207 of these fast and fabulous ideas!
We also took a peek at Simple Scrapbook's website (http://abc123.sewnews.com/content/viewmagazine/8/63/), and this picture summarizes what can be seen inside this magazine.

This magazine is available on http://www.bookoto.com/ for immediate delivery. Enjoy!

The Stampers' Sampler

The Stampers' Sampler

So what do we think of the Stampers' Sampler?

This issue of The Stampers' Sampler is a definite "must-have" for anyone who shares the passion for cardmaking and stamping.

The Stampers' Sampler has a very pleasing layout. As you browse this issue, you will immediately see the featured samples of art-inspired cards that can be done in less than 10 minutes. These beautifully photographed samples actually come with brief descriptions on how this artwork was created, and easy-to follow instructions. Take Ten is followed by a dedicated feature of a guest artist. It showcases the guest's artwork and it includes the details on what these cards are made of, the dimensions, the processes, and for the most part, the techniques used in creating this fantastic work of art. A little treat is included - free templates! Predictably, then comes the challenge, the show-us-what-you got section that would inspire anyone to create and share.

When I got a hold of a copy of this issue, it immediately gave me a jolt of endless inspiration from more than the 175 samples of "the best of the best" in card and stamp art. It sure challenges me to want to create, share and feel like a winner. -JK
