The Digital Photography Book 2: A Review

Saturday, November 29, 2008

These days, both professional and amateur photographers are even more keen on finding ways to improve their skill in the field. That is why there are literally hundreds of publications in book and magazine forms on the subject.

One of the most popular titles is Scott Kelby's The Digital Photographer Book Vol 2. We are amazed at how easy and simple it is to follow this book. While most photography books will complicate matters with an assortment of high-faluting jargon, this one takes you inside the subject in a conversational, straightforward manner- and in simple English.

Kelby's secret in making this book (or his books for that matter) a formula for success is also found in the orderly way the chapters are arranged. He started with assisting readers set up the external flash (both for Nikon & Canon users) which I personally had a hard time setting up with the flash/camera manual. I am personally grateful for this tiny bit of information because as you guessed it right, it was successful and I was only on the first chapter!

If you are aspiring to turn pro in the near future, the second chapter guides you into building a studio using only the rudimentary accessories and lighting. This chapter not only gives you a rundown of what you need, but more importantly, it exhaustively explains why. Which at the end of the day, you benefit and learn more.

The succeeding chapters are all about more tips on how to shoot like a pro whether it is for portrait, landscapes, wedding, travel, macro, etc. It even has a chapter dedicated to his 'recipes' on getting the shots featured on the page. An interesting chapter as each page will literally make you say: Ah, so that's how it's done! There are just so many a-ha moments in this book, I guarantee you that.

In conclusion, we at bookoto.com believes anyone with a remote interest in photography should get hold of this book. Not only it is very helpful for beginners, it also gives you that motivation to keep shooting until you get your perfect shot- an essential ingredient to become great in this field.

The "Show Us The Mini" Winner is...

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

by Nina Patena

I was inspired by Ali Edwards' recent challenge on her blog, something which she's done before, where you capture the daily happenings and goings-on of your life for the week. So that's some of what I did, my mini includes the daily log of what happened to our little family for the past week and a little more.

I was also recently inspired by SARK's newsletter about "mad pages". Basically, you write down all the negative, not-so-nice thoughts you have and exorcise them out of your system.

Lastly, I was also inspired by Stacy Julian's "here and now" challenge on her blog. You basically capture who you are, what your interests are here and now.

So, that's the process and this is the result. This mini is a daily log of a little over a week in our life, it is a journal where I also wrote some of my insecurities ("am i missing out?") and it also reflects most of my current interests and obsessions -- Alice in Wonderland (there's a really cool Chinese illustration of Alice and the Cheschire Cat on photo # 3 from a journal I bought in Taiwan), rubber/clear stamps, painting, a love for ephemera and my son's huge role in my life.

What materials did you use?

Boy, where do I start? I started by finally using my 4-year-old's incomplete ABC flash cards (he painted along with me). Then I played with some acrylic paint, some old rub-ons and ephemera (beautiful journal pages, Starbucks brochure, air mail sticker from the post office, sticker label from the airport), some stationery/office supplies (a Chinese timekeeping card, Post-its, mailing envelopes, stickers), rubber and clear stamps, ink and pen, and of course my rapidly growing supply of scrapbooking stuff (must... use... more!).

Congratulations, Nina for winning this challenge. As a gift, we are sending you an autographed copy of "Sharing Your Story" by Ali Edwards (thank you, Ali!)

THANK YOU to each one who participated in this challenge. Your stories and fantastic creations are very inspiring and we would like to congratulate each one for a job well done. Great minis! All your original works are showcased proudly in our gallery, to provide inspiration to fellow scrapbook artists.

We hope to see you all again for the next challenge on http://www.bookoto.com/!
